What kinds of teaching and learning materials are available?
You have unrestricted access to the following multimedia learning materials, which have been didactically worked up:
9 learning units divided into 30 chapters.
These learning units are available in German, English, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish and Czech.
As part of preparing for examinations each learning unit features a learning path (with a total of 200 self-administered tasks) which can be worked through on line or downloaded.
For non-commercial purposes the public-domain illustrations from the illustration pool at https://www.e-genius.at/en/image-collection may also be used.
- 1 e-learning course that is available in German, English, Italian, Dutch, Serbian, Hungarian and Greek. This course is divided into 7 units. All units can be downloaded as scripts in different formats: as Word, Pdf or Open Office document.
Who are the materials suitable for?
The content is aimed at schools and colleges, but can also be employed in adult education or utilized by laypeople interested in educating themselves further on their own.
The e-learning course “Shaping cities for better quality of life – Fostering collaboration through Living Labs” has been designed for people who want to bring about change in their city or neighborhood by working together on specific urban challenges. These can be either professionals working in the city planning sector, students or lay people interested in self-education programs
How do I find learning units on a given topic?
Each topic is colour-coded and contains a number of learning units; starting from the home page, these can be found either via the topic overview or directly via the overview of learning units.
The search facility (including searching in documents) and the tag cloud can also be used for this.
Using the materials
Which types of school are the materials designed for?
The materials are primarily intended for teachers and students in vocational schools, but can equally well be employed in colleges. Individual learning units are also suitable for first-year students at universities in preparation for examinations.
What is the difference between topic, learning unit and module?
A topic (e.g. “Energy-efficient building”) brackets a number of learning units together. A learning unit (e.g. “Passive house”) is a self-contained unit made up of chapters (e.g. “How do I plan the airtight level?”).
How can the materials be integrated in current teaching?
The materials are suitable for enhancing traditional teaching, for leading into or following up on instruction, for group work or as a basis for presentations.
They are suitable for individual online work and can be adapted to individual and group works in off-line formats, during co-creation workshops and seminars.
The learning units and modules are largely complete in themselves, so (depending on requirements) either individual sections can be utilized or complex topics can be worked up with the help of one or more modules.
Can I take part in the course "Living Labs"?
Yes. The e-learning course “Shaping cities for better quality of life – Fostering collaboration through Living Labs” is offered for anyone who is interested.
How do I start this course?
The course is offered as an open online course, thus you can start at any time.
How should I proceed with the online course?
You will be able to see all chapters, but the individual learning units constitute an entity and should therefore be elaborated in accordance with the recommended order.
Can I speak to a tutor?
e-genius does not provide you with a tutor.
Technical aspects
Can I integrate the materials in a learning management system?
All chapters / learning units can be integrated (unchanged or individually adapted) in an inhouse learning management system.
All learning units are available as scripts in various file formats: as Word, Pdf or Open Office document.
How can I integrate a learning unit in my school platform?
All learning units can be downloaded as HTML, Scorm or eXe files.
Learning unit as HTML file:
These files can be edited for teaching. To do this, the ZIP folder must first be unpacked on the PC and opened with an HTML editor (e.g. Dreamweaver); it can then be edited as appropriate.
Learning unit as Scorm 1.2 package:
The learning unit is available as a Scorm 1.2 package in a ZIP folder for downloading. The package can be downloaded and integrated in a learning management system (e.g. Moodle); in this case the ZIP folder is imported directly into the relevant learning management system.
Learning unit as eXe file:
The learning unit is available as an eXe file in a ZIP folder for downloading. With this file the entire learning unit can be edited. The following steps are required for this:
- Download the OpenSource application eXe under http://exelearning.net/downloads/.
- Install the eXe application on a PC.
- Download the eXe file and unpack it on the PC.
- Open the eXe file with the eXe application.

Legal aspects
What is the right way to cite?
Individual pieces of text may be cited in line with the existing rules of citation. The citation must be labelled as such, and the source must be named.
Attribution to e-genius must take the following form:
“Authors of the learning unit, year of publication, title of the learning unit. publisher: Verein e-genius, www.e-genius.at”
Individual illustrations may be used (unchanged) under the terms of licence. The source must be identified as follows:
